   At this year’s CANTO Annual Conference &amp; Trade Exhibition in August, Caribbean telecom executives highlighted a fundamental shift: connectivity is no longer the end product. It is the foundation.

Inge Smidts, CEO of Liberty Caribbean, framed it precisely: ​“The network is no longer the destination. It is the platform on which the Caribbean’s next economy will be built.” The question she posed to every telco operator in the room was not ​“how do we connect more people?” but ​“what are we going to build on top of that connectivity?” She pointed to AI as a leapfrog opportunity for the region, a chance to move faster than markets burdened by legacy thinking, but only if telcos are willing to adopt technology platforms that enable entirely new digital services and experiences.

That shift is not just a messaging change. It is a business model transformation. And it is impossible to achieve without fundamentally rethinking how telcos organize their operations, specifically how the core commerce layer and the customer experience layer work together.

Because right now, for most telco operators, they do not.

## The Disconnect Between Core and Customer

The failure is almost always the same. A store agent upgrades a customer’s plan and has no visibility into whether the device they just promised is actually in stock at their location, a nearby store, or in transit. The catalog the store is selling from is a different version than the one in the BSS, so product launches require manual synchronization and create ongoing sync errors. Promotions offered at the store level do not align with what the core system recognizes, which means hand-offs break and exceptions pile up. When a customer’s device is shipping, no one can tell them where it is because the POS has no connection to the logistics layer.

Starting a transaction in one channel and completing it in another is challenging because of missing centralized party interaction logic. What telcos call ​“omnichannel” is often just multi-channel.

These are not edge cases but daily operational reality for most telco operators. The root cause is not technology but architecture. Architecture unification and process standardization remain common challenges in multi-vendor telecom environments. When the core commerce layer and customer experience layer evolve independently, operational complexity increases, costs rise, and customers suffer.

## What Changes When You Connect Both Layers

Now imagine a different scenario – *Omnichannel experience in its true sense.*

A customer logs into a telco’s app. They see a promotion tailored to their usage pattern and current plan, pulled in real time from the core commerce platform’s promotions engine. They click upgrade. That action flows directly to inventory, billing, and customer records. The service activates. The bill updates. If they wants to pick up the device in store, the app shows them which location has it in stock. If they started the transaction at home and walk into the store to complete it, the associate already has context. No manual steps. No 24-hour processing delay. No gap between what the experience promised and what the backend could deliver.

That matters for Caribbean telco operators especially. Many Caribbean operators can modernize more quickly than organizations managing decades of layered systems and processes. The opportunity Smidts described at CANTO is real, but only if telcos invest in the right design, rather than layering modern front-ends on siloed back-office systems and wondering why the customer experience still feels broken.

## Why This Matters Now

The telcos that lead in this next era will not necessarily be the largest. They will be the ones who move fastest from selling connectivity to delivering a platform, supported by an operational foundation built on agility, openness, and connected commerce. That requires both layers: a robust core commerce platform and an equally sophisticated experience layer that knows who the customer is, what they want, and how to help them get there without friction.
