Stressing about the perfect gift for mom this year as Mother’s Day quickly approaches? It seems we’re all trying to outdo last year’s gift or in my case, trying to one up our siblings with a better gift. An NRF survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics revealed shoppers will spend the most ever this Mother’s Day, averaging about $186 a purchase.

Last year shoppers averaged about $172. This year's predicted spend of $23.6 billion would be the highest spend yet in the 14-year history of the spending poll. Last year was a record setter, hitting $21.4 billion.

"With spring in full bloom, many Americans are looking forward to splurging on their mothers this Mother's Day," NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said in a press release. "Retailers will be ready with a wide range of gift options and a variety of promotions for their customers."

Consumers will spend mostly on jewelry (36% of consumers, $5 billion) but dinner and meals are also high on the list with $4.2 billion in planned spending by 56%.

Looking to switch things up this year from jewelry and dinner out? Get techie with it and surprise the mom(s) in your life with one of these fun gadgets:

Because who doesn’t want to brag about owning the latest smartphone?

Samsung Galaxy S8 (for my fellow Android lovers): The best-looking phone around crushes it in performance, battery life, water-resistance and wireless charging. An external storage slot allows for more photos, videos, and music.

Apple iPhone 7 (for the Apple fans): Improved front and rear cameras — now with optical image stabilization — deliver much-improved photos. It’s water resistant, has a faster processor, and better battery life. Plus, it includes more onboard storage than last year's models for the same price.

Throw in a Kate Spade case for extra brownie points!
