IBM is now utilizing Watson’s intelligent data to predict what products will be hot this holiday season, reports Engadget.

IBM launched Watson Trend, an iOS app that ranks the top 100 products across three categories: consumer electronics, toys, and health and fitness. The supercomputer searches the web observing social media posts and conversations, blog posts and product reviews while analyzing the sentimental value to determine exactly how consumers feel about their new gadgets and gizmos. They are even promising Watson will be smart enough to know if products will be a quick fad or a long lasting trend.

Even just looking in the context of the upcoming holiday season, consumer behavior could be affected by trends more quickly than ever before. Watson’s intelligent data could enable retailers to more quickly identify trends and respond with tailored advertising and promotions -- maximizing their effectiveness. Watson provides a real-time gift guide based on what is trending as well as uses supply-and-demand metrics to drive consumers to the most appropriate available products. Imagine if gift guides were more like what is trending on Twitter or Reddit.

For answers to big questions or ones where there are many different contributing factors, computers have the capability to return information in a short time and potentially with greater insight. We just have to learn to feed in the right data and ask the right questions.
