It can seem too good to be true when you find a point-of-sale software that is a perfect match for you.

The exhaustive search for a POS solution that fits well into your business processes is like looking for that special someone. However, as time goes on, just as people change, so does business. What could have been a perfect relationship a few years ago could no longer be working anymore. The same can be said for your point-of-sale software. The smart thing to do would be to cut all ties and end the relationship if it’s just not working out. Although, this is easier said than done.

The fear of breaking it off

It is easy to make up reasons to stay with your existing system, for one its comfortable, you know what you’re getting and all those early relationship concerns have been resolved. Second, you haven’t been in the point of sale dating pool in a very long time, there are new trends and functionality that scare you, and that fear of getting into a toxic relationship with the wrong POS is a very real thought.

The sense of the unknown is very stressful. Finally, what will your friends say? Your employees have become very comfortable with the POS you are currently using, how will a change of software affect them? Will they take to your new system just as they did the one you are leaving?

It's not you, it's your legacy system

It’s understandable to be comfortable, yet, there are so many functions that a new POS can offer that your legacy system just can’t. Whether you want to increase mobility with a new tablet-based point of sale, a cleaner inventory display that is easier to update, or even add dropship capabilities, it’s easy to see why you need to break it off.

There is a lot of new information out there and this world may be scary for you, that’s why it's important to do your research and make the best decision, reach out to the company you are interested in and see exactly how their system can help you fulfil your business needs. Finally, proper change management is important when looking into changing a system. Employees that work with the system day to day need to be thought of. It is vital that training and support are available to them so they know you have their backs.

So what are you waiting for?

What is important to realize is that you can do better. Relying on an old legacy system is a common problem for many store owners for the reasons discussed above. Regardless, research into what is out there in the POS market is key. Finding the system that increases functionality and reliability over that of your legacy solution will help you become a better store owner and will help you see profits soar.
