BI Tips: Understanding Filtering

Jun 30, 2014 — Ashia Coleman

*Filters allow you to customize how data is displayed to you. There are several levels at which data can be filtered:

1. At the Dataset level: right-click on any dataset and go to Dataset Properties. On the Filters tab, you can filter the data to only show certain values. You cannot filter by aggregate functions [e.g. =Sum(Fields!Sales.value)] at the dataset level. You would instead filter by the field itself: Fields!Sales.value

2. At the Tablix level: right-click on any Tablix and go to Tablix Properties. On the Filters tab, you can filter the data to only show certain values. You cannot filter by aggregate functions [e.g. =Sum(Fields!Sales.value)] at the Tablix level. You would instead filter by the field itself: Fields!Sales.value

3. At the Row/Column Group Level: With your table selected, you will see a section at the bottom of your screen marked “Row Groups” and one marked “Column Groups”. Right-click on any row/column group and to Group Properties. On the Filters tab, you can filter the data to only show certain values. This level of filtering allows you to filter by aggregate functions, which can be helpful in drill-down reporting.
